The Blacksmith Shop (herein further referred to as The Shop) has a rich history in the quaint town of Douglas, MI. In the early 1920s, Herman Bekken opened the H.M. Bekken Horseshoeing & General Repairing. As one of three blacksmiths in the region, Herman’s skills were used to repair all types of plows, wagons, mowing machines, and sleighs. Folks would bring in their tools to get sharpened and the local farmers would come in to have their horses shoed. With the forge’s raging hot fire and anvil, Herman was also able to make his own tools such as hammers, tongs, and vices.
Herman and his wife, Jennie, lived above The Shop where they raised their four children: Everett, Howard, Mildred, and Gerald. Herman retired from blacksmithing in 1960 and passed away in 1963. Jennie lived upstairs until her passing in 1985. That’s when The Shop building was handed down to their youngest son Gerald. The blacksmith business was no longer in operation, but the upstairs was used as a rental property. A garage was later added on to the building for the tenant’s use and the downstairs was used for storage.
When the youngest of Herman and Jennie's children passed away in 2021, the building was entrusted to the next generation of Bekkens. With fond memories of visiting their grandfather, it was their dream to bring The Shop back to life. During the renovation process, they uncovered several of Herman’s tools and artifacts that you’ll find hanging in The Shop today, along with the original forge and harness rings where Herman would tie the horses while working on them. The Shop has recently been built out into a one-bedroom fully furnished spacious vacation rental property.

This was an incredible find for our trip to Douglas/Saugatuck! Perfectly located and very accommodating. It was clean and well furnished. The parking spot in the driveway was convenient and there is a good number of walkable restaurants nearby. Highly recommend and hopefully we can come back next year for the Halloween festivities!

We had a great stay at The Shop. It was a perfect getaway for my husband and I. We had a little trouble figuring out the thermostat and tv but everything else was lovely. Definitely would stay there again if we head back to the west side of Michigan.

Being a 30+ year renter in Saugatuck/Douglas, this property is tops! Everyone should know this building!
I actually had (2) long-term Saugatuck/Douglas renters ask me about the property … I invited them in for a peek and they were thrilled to see it!

Location, location, location - all of Douglas on your doorstep and Saugatuck a quick, easy ride (even used the $1 shuttle bus to Saugatuck that picked us up and delivered us). Unit was historically interesting with little touches preserved. Spacious and well-outfitted. Everything was as pictured and described. Only 2 small points - upstairs long-term renter made some early-morning noises above the bedroom (manageable); ‘efficiently' supplied for a week's stay. Would definitely recommend and stay again.

A fun getaway The property and location are spectacular! We had a wonderful time during our stay. The property is on a quiet street and is very close to downtown Douglas. Several local coffeeshops and restaurants were within 5 minutes of walking. Also easily walkable to Saugatuck. The king bed was wonderful for two 6 foot + tall people, but the frame is not very sturdy. Overall, I would absolutely recommend The Shop in Douglas.

We stayed in the shop for four nights on a family vacation. The place is right in town and has a great location. A lot of history being that it's a re-purposed and completely renovated blacksmiths shop. There is a tenant who lives upstairs and you can hear everything that goes on. If you are very sensitive this type of noise I would avoid. For us overall it was incredible.

Great place. Location was convenient with good parking but also on a quiet street. The artifacts from the old blacksmith shop were really interesting and both the interior and exterior had lots of character. The kitchen was well equipped and it was also great to have a gas grill on the patio. There was a little bit of noise when people living upstairs walked around but not bad and did not disturb us at all. Would definitely stay again!

I came to spend the weekend for my birthday with a couple of friends. We drove from Illinois (easy drive). When we arrived it was easy to find, parking was so accessible and available upon arrival. The host let us check in early which they didn't have to do, very kind. The kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom were all beautiful. The bed was very comfortable and the sofa bed was also a great addition. Everything went smoothly. There was an outdoor patio with seating and a grill which I thought was very nice. The in-unit laundry also helped to have during this trip. Everything was walkable and a very short distance from Douglas to Saugatuck, under a 5 min drive. My friends and I had a great time and will definitely stay here again.

We have rented homes in this part of Michigan several times and always love it. The Shops location in Douglas is great for being right next to restaurants and a little shopping but quieter then the near by Saugatuck. Just a few minutes drive to Fennville with some wineries and a brewery to visit. We biked and walked to downtown Saugatuck with ease. Close to kayak rentals and beautiful evening walks along the tree lined streets. Also not far from Holland and its lovely downtown and beaches. Great new property
