There is a specific kind of magic that settles over the Lake Michigan shoreline in May. The air loses its winter bite, the cherry blossoms begin to pop, and the entire region prepares for two of our favorite traditions: Tulip Time and Mother’s Day.
If you’re looking for the perfect spring escape, staying in one of our coastal towns, South Haven, Saugatuck, or Grand Haven, offers the best of both worlds. You get the world-class floral displays of Holland just a short drive away, paired with the quiet, breezy charm of a lakeside retreat.
Here is how to plan the ultimate May getaway for Mom (or yourself!) in 2026.
The Main Event: Tulip Time (May 1–10, 2026)
While the millions of tulips are centered in Holland, staying just 20–40 minutes away in our rental homes is the “pro move.” You can spend your morning marveling at the Tulip Immersion Garden or catching the Dutch Dancers in Holland, then retreat to the peaceful lakeshore to avoid the festival crowds in the evening.
Pro Tip: This year, Mother’s Day falls on the final Sunday of the festival (May 10). It’s the perfect “grand finale” to a week of blooms!
South Haven: Muffins, Mimosas, and Maritime Charm
South Haven is the place to be if Mom loves a mix of shopping and shoreline strolls.
- The Big Event: Don’t miss “Muffins, Mimosas, and More” on Saturday, May 9th. It’s a downtown shopping extravaganza where local boutiques offer “M”-inspired treats while you browse spring fashions and home décor.
- Art & Culture: Stop by the South Haven Center for the Arts for their 77th Annual Member Exhibition. It’s housed in a beautiful historic Carnegie Library, a perfect quiet moment before a walk to the South Pier lighthouse.
- Family Fun: If you’re visiting earlier in the weekend, check out Farm History Day at the Michigan Flywheelers Museum on May 8th for some old-fashioned candle dipping and butter churning.
Saugatuck: The “Art Coast” Mother’s Day
Saugatuck and Douglas are world-renowned for their galleries and sophisticated dining, making it a top-tier choice for a Mother’s Day brunch.
- Brunch Spot: Book a table at Clearbrook Golf Club or take a short scenic drive to Tabor Hill Winery for a vineyard brunch Mom will never forget.
- The Vibe: May is “Art Attack” season in Saugatuck. Spend the afternoon hopping between galleries or taking a slow walk along the Kalamazoo River. While the famous Chain Ferry doesn’t usually start its engines until Memorial Day, the views from Mount Baldhead are stunning this time of year.
- Shopping: The boutiques along Butler Street are in full “spring mode,” perfect for finding a unique Mother’s Day gift that didn’t come from a big-box store.
Grand Haven: The Classic Boardwalk Experience
Grand Haven in May is all about fresh air and iconic views. It’s the ideal spot for the family that wants to stay active.
- The Pier Walk: There is nothing more “West Michigan” than a walk down the Grand Haven pier. In May, the lake is a deep, sparkling blue, and the crowds are still light.
- Downtown Treats: Grab a coffee at Aldea Coffee and explore the shops on Washington Ave. For a Mother’s Day treat, a stop at Pronto Pup (if they’ve opened their windows for the season!) or a gourmet sandwich from The Toasted Pickle is a must.
- Note for Kite Lovers: If you decide to extend your stay, the Grand Haven Kite Festival takes over the sky just one week after Mother’s Day (May 16th and 17th)!
